The worst mistakes most Pilates teachers make, and this has included me in the past, is not to work on my own inner spiritual, mental and belief system.
Many Pilates teachers do not lack movement, but what we lack is inner meditative and creative practices that bring us more in line with Dr.Quiet
Hippocrates talked about three doctors: Dr.Diet, Dr.Quiet and Dr.Happy, now in the 20th century we need Dr.Movement. Not all movement always suits us best, we need to be aware as to what the allostatic load of the person is.
For example, I have many clients come to me desperate to lose weight, get out of pain and drop inflammation. But this is the thing, the body cannot tell the difference between a divorce and a high impact exercise. Many of these clients would be better walking daily rather than re increasing cortisol which does not change tissue response.
The allostatic load of every person is different. This is why you can have ten people with flu, back pain, fibromyalgia and cancer and everyone will be different. We are all unique individuals, and one size does not fit all. The future of medicine, diet and movement will be individual programs for those who have the resources.
Now many Pilates teachers, especially studios owners are burning the candle at both ends with early morning and late-night sessions. Unable to get the right staff, they end up the cleaner, the marketer, the social media person and the endless caregiver archetype. The clients are craving more cortisol and resolve to giving them what they want and following the trend from other studios rather than sticking to their own boundaries.
I do not need to follow any studio or anyone else.
I lead by example, and have the courage to go against the grain and be disliked is something I am okay with.
After all, when I opened my first studio over 30 years ago, there was no one to ask, no one to study with and not even a reformer to use in the Northwest. Understanding your core values are so important. You cannot give to others from an empty cup. We tend to attract what is living deep in our subconscious and what needs to change in our life. The pain teacher will keep showing up physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, till we have learnt from it.
Conclusion
When you work on yourself first before your business, you upgrade, you become more calmer, and you set your standards. You then have an aligned body, without digestive issues and balanced hormones to run the business.
It takes 25% or more of your total calorific intake energy to just run the brain.
So, if you have digestive issues and structural pain or inflammation, energy is diverted there. So, if you work on yourself, you become more aligned and healthier, your energy can then be funnelled into becoming more proficient and productive. The external projection is a business does better.
